A girl playing the shamisen

The shamisen lute originated in Okinawa as the jamisen. A musician named Nakanokoji of Sakai near Osaka remodeled the jamisen around 1570, and Yanagawa and Yatsuhashi established the shamisen as a musical instrument between 1624 and 1644. It was an easy instrument for young women. Two kinds of music were composed for the shamisen: narratives and songs.==Date:unknown, Place:unknown, Photo:Tamamura Kozaburo, (Credit:Nagasaki University Library/Kyodo News Images) [Cabinet Number68‐15‐0]
