Venus, Jupiter successfully photographed

A Kyodo News photographer successfully captures on film Jupiter (near top of the photo) and Venus near the crescent moon in the sky west of Itoman, Okinawa, at 7:10 p.m. on Thursday Feb. 18. According to the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan, it will be several years before the two stars can be seen again in the same direction. ==Kyodo

              A Kyodo News photographer successfully captures on film Jupiter (seen as the dot on top) and Venus (the dot below) together with France's Statue of Liberty, which has been on loan to Japan since last spring at Odaiba Marine Park in Tokyo. The photo was taken at 7 p.m. on Feb. 23. The statue came to Japan as the centerpiece of the ''Year of France in Japan'' celebration. ==Kyodo

                First light images taken by Japan's 'Subaru' telescope

                This handout photo of the Orion nebula, released by the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ) on Jan. 29, has been taken using 'Subaru,' one of the world's largest optical-infrared telescopes located in Hawaii. It shows sharp images of four bright stars called Trapezium, which are normally concealed behind gas clouds. The Subaru Telescope, named after the Japanese word for Pleiades, made verifiable observations of objects 5 billion light years away in the Milky Way Galaxy in two hours, compared with the seven hours it took the orbiting Hubble Telescope, NAOJ officials said. ==Kyodo
