LDP's Yamashita wins upper house by-election in Shiga Pref.

OTSU, Japan - Hidetoshi Yamashita (C) lifts two bouquets into the air Oct. 22 after winning a House of Councillors by-election in Shiga Prefecture by running on the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) ticket. At right is his wife Mieko. Yamashita, a 47-year-old former banker and the son of late Defense Agency chief Ganri Yamashita, beat Shunyu Norikumo, a former professor at Ryukoku University in Kyoto who ran on the Democratic Party of Japan ticket. He also vanquished Takashi Kawauchi, a member of the Japanese Communist Party. Yamashita will fill a seat vacated by Tenzo Okumura, who resigned before an unsuccessful attempt to win a lower house seat as an independent in the June 25 general elections.

Former Osaka governor gets suspended term for molesting woman

OSAKA, Japan - Former Osaka Gov. Knock Yokoyama enters the Osaka District Court on Aug. 10. Yokoyama was sentenced to 18 months in prison, suspended for three years, for molesting a female assistant during his campaign for reelection in April last year.

Public debate for Osaka gubernatorial by-election held

OSAKA, Japan - Three candidates in the Feb. 6 Osaka gubernatorial by-election participate in a public debate in Osaka on Jan. 19. They are (from L) Tatsuro Hiraoka, who runs a number of private schools in Osaka, Fusae Ota, former bureaucrat at the Ministry of International Trade and Industry, and Makoto Ajisaka, professor emeritus at Kansai University. The election is being held to replace disgraced former Gov. Knock Yokoyama, who resigned in December just before being indicted for allegedly molesting a female campaign worker in April last year.

Prosecutors raid Osaka Gov. Yokoyama's office

OSAKA, Japan - Public prosecutors enter the office of Osaka Gov. Knock Yokoyama on Dec. 20 to search in connection with a criminal complaint filed against the governor by a female college student. They simultaneously searched Yokoyama's official residence. The 21-year-old women alleges Yokoyama, 67, sexually assaulted her in the back of a campaign vehicle during his election campaign in April. Prosecutors have questioned the governor about the allegations.

Osaka Gov. Yokoyama ordered to pay 11 mil. yen damages

OSAKA, Japan - Osaka Gov. Knock Yokoyama speaks to reporters at his office Dec. 13 shortly after he was ordered by the Osaka District Court to pay 11 million yen in compensation to a 21-year-old university student for sexually harassing her during his reelection campaign in April and later slandering her by filing a counter lawsuit. In the press conference, Yokoyama, 67, said, ''I have no plans to resign. Since I stuck to my decision to place priority on official duties, such a ruling was inevitable.''

Yokoyama receives educational award in S. Africa

PRETORIA, South Africa - Osaka Gov. OSAKA, Japan - Osaka Gov. Knock Yokoyama is surrounded by reporters in Osaka on Oct. 4 soon after effectively losing a civil lawsuit filed by a 21-year-old university student accusing him of sexual harassment during his campaign for reelection in April. The student, who worked as a campaign volunteer, is seeking 12 million yen as compensation for psychological distress. Yokoyama, 67, lost the case when his lawyer chose not to counter the charges at the first oral proceeding at the Osaka District Court.
