NTT split into 3 firms

Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp. (NTT) President Junichiro Miyazu speaks at a news conference following reorganization of Japan's telecom giant July 1. In the biggest change since its privatization in 1985, NTT transformed itself into two regional companies and one long-distance and international carrier under a holding company with about 120 subsidiaries and affiliates under its umbrella.

Merged DDI, dubbed KDDI, begins operations

TOKYO, Japan - Yusai Okuyama (4th from L), president of a newly created company resulting from a merger of long-distance phone carrier DDI Corp., international carrier KDD Corp. and mobile phone operator IDO Corp., joins hands with other company executives at a ceremony Oct. 2 in Tokyo to unveil the new corporate logotype. The three officially merged the previous day under DDI's banner, becoming Japan's second-largest telecom. The new DDI is dubbed KDDI.

Seiyo of Saison group files for liquidation+

TOKYO, Japan - Hiroshi Ota (C), president of Seiyo Corp., announces at a press conference July 18 that the financially troubled real estate developer belonging to the Saison retail group filed for liquidation with the Tokyo District Court the same day. With 19 of Seiyo's 30 affiliated companies to be liquidated as well, the 20 companies' liabilities total 553.8 billion yen.

TOKYO, Japan - Japanese and U.S. officials on July 10 resume talks in Tokyo on telecommunications deregulation in a bid to resolve their longstanding dispute over Japan's telephone interconnection rates before the July 21-23 Group of Eight summit in Okinawa Prefecture. The two countries are at odds over how to reduce the hookup fees that Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp. charges its competitors for use of its local networks. The previous round of talks was held in March.

Among the issues under discussion are the lowering of interconnection fees charged by telecom giant Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp., a dispute over dumping charges made by U.S. steelmakers against Japanese steel manufacturers and the early creation of an environment in Japan suitable for an information technology network.
