Adventurer set to cross Tsugaru Strait

                TACHIKAWA, Japan - A 57-year-old adventurer from Tokyo said he hopes to complete his 22,000-kilometer trek by dog sled across the Arctic from central Siberia to eastern Greenland in July 2002, more than five years since he set out on the journey and traveling nearly double the current long-distance record. Kazuo Kojima said he embarked on the trip because he wanted to follow the route supposedly taken by ancestors of the Inuits to reach the North American continent some 20,000 years ago. This photo was taken in May 2001, when Kojima and his Canadian teammate reached northern Canada after traveling some 2,500 km.

                  TOKYO, Japan - Photo of satellite imagery, provided by Akiko Higurashi, shows that sand blown over from continental Asia which recently affected Japan's northernmost main island of Hokkaido covered a vast swathe of the northwestern Pacific. Higurashi, a researcher from the National Institute for Environmental Studies in Tsukuba, Ibaraki Prefecture, said the sand reached from the Sea of Japan in the east, covering Hokkaido and the northern tip of the main island of Honshu, stretching northeast over the Kurile Islands and the Sea of Okhotsk.

                    SHIKINEJIMA, Japan - Photo, taken from a Kyodo News helicopter at 5:30 p.m. on July 20, shows the islands of Shikinejima (front) and Niijima (back) that were hit by a series of moderate but shallow earthquakes on July 20. The strongest quake jolted the island of Shikinejima with an intensity of 5 on the 7-point Japanese intensity scale, the Meteorological Agency said. An earthquake measuring upper 5 jolted the less than 1,000-populated and 3.7 square-kilometer isle at 2:32 a.m., followed by three other lower 5 intensity earthquakes at 11:19 a.m., 12:10 p.m. and 12:29 p.m.

                      TOKYO, Japan - High waves hit the coast of quake-prone Kozushima Island, south of Tokyo, July 7 as a powerful typhoon heading northward toward Japan in the Pacific Ocean will likely lash the Izu Islands later in the day with heavy rain and strong winds. The typhoon may also hit Japan's main island of Honshu on the morning of July 8.
