Women to join Nagasaki peiron meet

NAGASAKI, Japan - Women from the Nagasaki prefectural office on July 21 train for the first women's peiron dragon-boat racing contest this weekend in Nagasaki Prefecture, southwestern Japan. City government employees, local housewives and other women will make up seven teams of 20 rowers, who will compete for the fastest finish over a distance of 1,200 meters.

      NAGASAKI, Japan - Two teams, from Japan (foreground) and Thailand, compete in a qualifier for the three-century-old annual dragon boat race in Nagasaki on July 23. Crews of about 30, on board narrow wooden crafts called 'Peiron,' raced 1.2 kilometers in Nagasaki harbor. A crowd of roughly 25,000 cheered the regatta under sunny skies as crew members beat drums and gongs on the boats. A total of 29 teams, including four from overseas -- Thailand, South Korea, the Netherlands and China -- took part in this year's event. Dragon boat racing originated in China.
