'Unknown' sea off Ogasawara Islands now open to divers

TOKYO, Japan - The sea off Hahajima Island in the Ogasawara Islands, about 1,000 kilometers southeast of Tokyo, had been known as the ''unknown sea'' before it was opened to scuba divers in April. Photo shows divers around the huge deer-horn coral (L) and Porites coral (R) (''hamasango'' in Japanese) at a depth of 15 meters. The seven photos in this series were taken in mid-July by Kyodo News photojournalists. (1st in 7-photo series).

      TOKYO, Japan - Mt. Oyama, a volcano located on Miyakejima Island, some 180 kilometers south of Tokyo, erupts Aug. 10, spewing smoke as high as 3,000 meters.           MIYAKE, Japan - Mount Oyama on Miyakejima, a small volcanic island some 180 kilometers south of Tokyo, erupted at around 6:43 p.m. on July 8 after confirming that white smoke was billowing out of the mountain. The aerial photo was taken in the morning of July 9 by a helicopter chartered by Kyodo News. According to the Meteorological Agency, the mountain erupted only once, with smoke billowing 800 meters above the crater, and a small amount of volcanic ash was confirmed to have spewed out from the crater, but the smoke disappeared at around 6:50 p.m.

              TOKYO, Japan - A handout photo shows a part of the engine pipes of Japan's satellite-bearing H-2 rocket that crashed after takeoff in mid-November. It was found Jan. 5 by a deep-sea probe machine on the Pacific seabed near the Ogasawara Islands. The object, which lies on the seabed 2,913 meters down, was photographed by the search machine ''Deep Toe'' from the mother ship Yokosuka, belonging to the Japan Marine Science and Technology Center.
