Mt. Oyama erupts, residents evacuate

TOKYO, Japan - Mt. Oyama, a volcano located on Miyakejima Island, some 180 kilometers south of Tokyo, erupts Aug. 10, spewing smoke as high as 3,000 meters. The 813-meter volcano (in this photo taken from a Kyodo News helicopter) erupted for the first time since July 15, forcing nearby residents to evacuate.

                  TOKYO, Japan - Lee Kang Young (photo), a South Korean atomic bomb survivor who filed a lawsuit in Japan over unpaid medical allowances, died on July 11 in a hospital in Busan, South Korea. He was 78. Lee, born in Kitakyushu, Fukuoka Prefecture, was exposed to radiation in the U.S. atomic bombing of Nagasaki on Aug. 9, 1945, while he was working there as a forced laborer.
