U.N. conference on nuclear-weapons free zone opens

SAPPORO, Japan - A U.N.-sponsored conference on the establishment of a nuclear-weapons free zone in Central Asia opens at a Sapporo hotel on Oct. 5. The four-day meeting is being attended by officials from Kyrgyzstan, Kazakstan, Uzbekistan, the United Nations and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
