Season's first herring roe auction starts in Osaka

OSAKA, Japan - Brokers bid on the season's first auction of herring roe at Osaka Central Wholesale Market, Fukushima Ward, Osaka, on Nov. 19. Herring roe, a delicacy, is among the foods traditionally served to celebrate the New Year in Japan. The auction started at 9 a.m. The highest bid of day was 8,300-9,000 yen per kilogram. Most herring roe was imported from Canada and Alaska.

Market officials said the globefish, a kind of puffer fish often served as sashimi, in hot pots and fried, is selling for 23,000 yen per kilogram, down 5,000 yen from a year ago.

Tanaka, who was born in the year of the Serpent, next year's symbol in the 12-year cycle, was ceremonially opening the posting of New Year's greeting cards at post offices across Japan for delivery on the first day of the 21st century.

Women's groups call for Osaka Gov. Yokoyama's resignation

OSAKA, Japan - Women's groups march on the main street of Osaka's Chuo Ward on Nov. 1, demanding Osaka Gov. Knock Yokoyama step down over his involvement in a high-profile sexual harassment case. His accuser, a 21-year-old college student, earlier in the day increased her demand for compensation to 15 million yen from 12 million yen. Yokoyama, 67, chose not to challenge her demand during the final hearing of the case at the Osaka District Court in October.
