Etorofu girl leaves hospital after heart surgery

SAPPORO, Japan - Three-year-old Evgeniya (R), held by her mother Veronika Rodionova (L), 34, leaves the Hokkaido University hospital in Sapporo on Nov. 30 after more than a month of treatment for heart disease. Evgeniya, who is from Russian-occupied Etorofu Island, underwent surgery on Oct. 25 under the Japanese government's humanitarian aid program for four Russian-held islands that lie off Japan's northernmost main island of Hokkaido and are claimed by Japan.

Earlier in the day, doctors at Hokkaido University removed two organs from the donor -- a kidney for the younger woman at the municipal hospital in Sapporo and a liver for the older woman in Kyoto. The liver was transported to Kyoto by plane and Shinkansen bullet train.
