TSE experts prepare for Jan. 4 trading+

TOKYO, Japan - Experts at the Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE) conduct final tests on Jan. 1 to ensure that no Y2K computer bugs will disrupt business Jan. 4, the first trading day of the year. The TSE plans to complete checking its computer systems during the day and to connect them with computers at brokerages Jan. 2 and 3 to see if securities transactions will take place normally. Some 50 staff members were present Saturday and demonstrated trading and settlement processes on computers.

              TOKYO, Japan - A jazz concert is held on Dec. 29 at the Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE) in Tokyo's Kabutocho district after the market close, commemorating the final trading session of the 20th century. The ''Millennium Jazz Concert'' featured popular jazz pianist Yosuke Yamashita and was attended by securities industry officials and some 50 guests from various circles.

The benchmark Nikkei 225 index hit the year's closing high of 18,934.34, with the Tokyo Stock Price Index (TOPIX) of all First Section issues also climbing to the year's highest close of 1,722.20.

                    The floor of the Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE) is thronged for the opening of the year's first trading session Jan. 4. Shares on the Tokyo market opened sharply lower, with the 225-issue Nikkei average falling 327.94 points, or 2.37 percent, from Dec. 30 to 13,514.23 in the first 15 minutes of trading. Floor trading in Tokyo will disappear in April with the beginning of full-scale computerization.
