Nikkei closes above 19,000 for first time in 28 months

TOKYO, Japan - The key Nikkei index closed above 19,000 for the first time in more than 28 months on the Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE) on this year's opening session Jan. 4. The Nikkei 225 index gained 68.52 points to 19,002.86. As is customary on the first and last trading sessions of the year, the TSE was open only for the morning session. The last time the Nikkei index closed above 19,000 was Aug. 21, 1997, when it reached 19,157.12.
