1995 Kobe earthquake - then and now
KOBE, Japan - Jan. 17 marks the fifth anniversary of the 1995 Kobe earthquake that flattened the western Japan port city, killing 6,432 people and destroying 118,000 houses. The photo on the right is an aerial picture of Kobe's Nagata Ward taken three days after the earthquake. The one on the left is a picture of the same location taken from a Kyodo helicopter five years later.
