Police inspect garbage returned from Manila

UTSUNOMIYA, Japan - Wearing helmets and masks, policemen on Jan. 19 inspect garbage shipped back from the Philippines to check whether it was exported in violation of an international law banning the transport of harmful waste. The 2,700 tons of garbage in 122 containers reportedly included disposable plastic syringes, adult diapers, aluminum foil and sanitary napkins.

110 tons of medical waste dumped in Hiroshima

HIROSHIMA, Japan - Plastic containers filled with infectious medical waste are left unattended inside the compound of an industrial waste incinerating facility in Hiroshima's Asakita Ward. About 110 tons of medical wastes packed into some 11,000 containers have been found inside the compound. The police say the medical waste, such as used syringes, blood transfusion tubes and medical masks, was collected by the Osaka-based garbage disposal company Kotoku from several medical institutions in Osaka Prefecture. Kotoku allegedly subcontracted -- without government approval -- the disposal to various garbage disposal operators in Tottori and Hiroshima prefectures and the medical waste ended up in the disposal facility. Hazardous waste-carrying ship heading for Tokyo

TOKYO, Japan - The photo, taken by a Kyodo News helicopter at a point about 120 kilometers south-southwest of Omaezaki, Shizuoka Prefecture, shows the MV Pulsar, a Panamanian-registered containership, heading for Tokyo port on Jan. 9. The vessel is sailing at a speed of about 4 knots per hour, carrying 122 containers of hazardous garbage shipped from Manila. The hospital and household waste had been illegally exported to the Philippines in July and is being shipped back to Japan. The containers are to be unloaded at Tokyo port on Jan. 11.

Japanese experts begin checking waste dumped in Manila

MANILA, Philippines - A team of Japanese government officials and environmental experts inspect waste illegally shipped to the Philippines from Japan in July at a Manila harbor. Masafumi Ishii of Japan's Foreign Ministry leads the seven-man team in inspecting the containers packed with soiled adult diapers, plastic pouches bearing Japanese characters, plastic cases for syringe needles, and other hospital waste.
