Public debate for Osaka gubernatorial by-election held

OSAKA, Japan - Three candidates in the Feb. 6 Osaka gubernatorial by-election participate in a public debate in Osaka on Jan. 19. They are (from L) Tatsuro Hiraoka, who runs a number of private schools in Osaka, Fusae Ota, former bureaucrat at the Ministry of International Trade and Industry, and Makoto Ajisaka, professor emeritus at Kansai University. The election is being held to replace disgraced former Gov. Knock Yokoyama, who resigned in December just before being indicted for allegedly molesting a female campaign worker in April last year.

Knock Yokoyama speaks to reporters at his office Dec. 13 shortly after he was ordered by the Osaka District Court to pay 11 million yen in compensation to a 21-year-old university student for sexually harassing her during his reelection campaign in April and later slandering her by filing a counter lawsuit. OSAKA, Japan - Osaka Gov. Knock Yokoyama is surrounded by reporters in Osaka on Oct. 4 soon after effectively losing a civil lawsuit filed by a 21-year-old university student accusing him of sexual harassment during his campaign for reelection in April. The student, who worked as a campaign volunteer, is seeking 12 million yen as compensation for psychological distress. Yokoyama, 67, lost the case when his lawyer chose not to counter the charges at the first oral proceeding at the Osaka District Court.
