JSA threatens legal action over bout-fixing allegations

TOKYO, Japan - Tokitsukaze, chairman of the Japan Sumo Association (JSA), reads from a letter of written protest Jan. 27, hitting back over allegations made last week by a former wrestler that bout-rigging is part and parcel of Japan's national sport. He said that Keisuke Itai, a former komusubi, had ''damaged the honor'' of sumo, adding JSA's lawyers are currently investigating the possibility of taking legal action.

Akebono, 31, and stablemaster Azumazeki called on JSA Chairman Tokitsukaze earlier in the day to discuss the yokozuna's future. During his career, Akebono was repeatedly sidelined with knee problems and various injuries.
