Police formally end probe into Glico-Morinaga case

OSAKA, Japan - At midnight Feb. 12, police formally end their 16-year investigation of the ''Glico-Morinaga'' case, which involved extortion, attempted murder and the poisoning of confectionery dating back to 1984. At midnight, when the statute of limitations expired on the last of the charges that could be brought, police called it quits after mobilizing a total of 1.3 million officers during the 16-year probe into 28 related incidents.

          SENDAI, Japan - A 29-year-old male nurse, Daisuke Mori, is escorted by police officers at the Izumi Police Station in Sendai on Feb. 18 as he is sent to prosecutors on suspicion of attempting to murder a 1-year-old girl by administering her with lethal amounts of muscle relaxant via an intravenous drip. Police allege that Mori administered the drug to the girl at Hokuryo Clinic on Feb. 2 last year. The girl temporarily stopped breathing but later recovered and was discharged from the hospital. Mori has been in custody since being arrested Jan. 6 and subsequently charged with attempting to kill an 11-year-old girl Oct. 31 last year using the same method. The girl is still unconscious.

            OSAKA, Japan - An Osaka prefectural police officer Feb. 16 takes down a signboard outside the headquarters of the investigation task force for the unsolved ''Glico-Morinaga'' case, which involved extortion, attempted murder and the poisoning of confectionery dating back to 1984. Osaka and Kyoto prefectural police forces formally disbanded their task forces for the case the same day as they sent notification to public prosecutors of the expiration of the statute of limitations and investigative reports on the case.

              WAKAYAMA, Japan - Residents in the western Japan city of Wakayama hold a memorial service on July 20 for four people killed in a curry poisoning case in the city's Sonobe district a year ago. In a park near the spot of the July 25 incident, about 40 people place flowers before a small altar and offered silent players for then local community leader Takatoshi Taninaka and three others. The four people died and the others fell ill after eating curry poisoned with arsenic which was served at a local community summer festival. Former insurance saleswoman Masumi Hayashi, 37, was arrested last October and subsequently indicted on charges of murder and attempted murder in the case.
