2 Japanese-Australians picked for Sydney torch-relay team
THURSDAY ISLAND, Australia - Lilyjane Shibasaki, 40, (R) and her brother Wally Shibasaki, 39, who live on the Thursday Island, strike a pose after being chosen as torch-relay runners for the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney. The island is located in the Torres Strait between Papua New Guinea and Australia. They are grandchildren of Japanese pearl diver Kyukichi Shibasaki, who moved to the island in 1920 and whose name is included on the memorial stone behind them in the photo.
