Nuclear waste arrives in Japan after processed in France

ROKKASHO, Japan - A group of protesters rally at a port in Aomori Prefecture against the arrival Feb. 23 of a British cargo ship carrying high-level radioactive waste processed in France. The 4,527-ton Pacific Swan docked at Mutsu-Ogawara port near the village of Rokkasho, northeastern Japan, where a nuclear fuel reprocessing plant is being built. The shipment, the fifth of its kind since 1995, comprises 104 rods of vitrified blocks produced on behalf of five electric power companies in Japan.
