Telegraph plants prove a hit at flora show

KOBE, Japan - A visitor to Japan Flora 2000 admires a telegraph plant. The plants, known for the distinctive movement of their leaves, have become popular among visitors to the flora exhibition being held at Awajishima Island, Hyogo Prefecture. The plants, which are often found in China, grow to around 1.2 meters and have violet flowers.

              KOBE, Japan - A bench, claimed to be the world's longest at 555 meters, is unveiled to the public June 21 at the Japan Flora 2000 expo now underway in Awajishima Island in Hyogo Prefecture. The ''555 Bench'' can seat more people than the 460.9-meter bench in Togi, Ishikawa Prefecture, the current record-holder for the longest bench in the Guinness Book of Records.

                  AWAJISHIMA, Japan - Dignitaries on March 17 kick off Japan Flora 2000, a gardening and landscaping exposition, at a ceremony on Awajishima Island, Hyogo Prefecture. About 1,000 people attended the ceremony, including Prince and Princess Akishino (3rd and 2nd from R and also on the screen) and ambassadors from various countries. Japan Flora 2000 officially begins March 18 and runs until Sept. 17.

                    AKASHI, Japan - Akashi Kaikyo Bridge - the world longest suspension bridge (3,911-meter-long) over the Akashi strait connecting Kobe in Hyogo Prefecture and Awaji Island. Tha Akashi Kaikyo Bridge's two towers, which rise 297 meters above the water, also are said to be the tallest of thier kind in the world.
