Akebono bounces Takatoriki out of ring in summer sumo

TOKYO, Japan - Yokozuna Akebono bounces komusubi Takatoriki out of the ring and onto his behind at Ryogoku Kokugikan on May 7 to open the 15-day Summer Grand Sumo Tournament with a win over the winner of the spring tourney in March. The Hawaiian-born grand champion is seeking his first championship in three years.

Robot sumo tournament begins in Hokkaido

ASAHIKAWA, Japan - Two men set their robotic sumo wrestlers face to face on a special dohyo ring, as first round matches get underway at the first regional preliminaries in Asahikawa, central Hokkaido on Sept. 2. A total of 175 robots, backed by their creators and owners, took part in the Hokkaido preliminary of the 13th FSI-All Japan Robot-Sumo Tournament scheduled for Dec. 23 at Tokyo's Ryogoku Kokugikan.

TOKYO, Japan - Hawaiian-born sumo elder and former yokozuna Akebono (C) is honored by U.S. Ambassador to Japan Thomas Foley (L) at the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo on March 29 for his longtime contribution to strengthening U.S.-Japan relations through the sport as his wife Christine Reiko and daughter Cairtlin watch. Foley handed Akebono a letter of appreciation from Secretary of State Colin Powell praising him as ''a model ambassador of goodwill in Japan.''
