FIFA begins inspection of World Cup venues in Japan

SAPPRO, Japan - A delegation of soccer's world governing body FIFA on May 8 inspects Sapporo Dome in Hokkaido, which is under construction as one of Japan's 10 stadiums to host matches in the 2002 World Cup finals to be co-hosted with South Korea. The delegation, led by FIFA executive Abdullah Aldabal, is also scheduled to visit venues in Oita, Niigata and Ibaraki Prefectures later this week.

Fukuoka firm to offer interpretation for World Cup visitors

FUKUOKA, Japan - Tisco Japan Inc. said May 2 it will begin interpretation services for foreign visitors traveling to Japan and South Korea before and during the World Cup soccer finals. Interpretation will be provided from Japanese into four languages, and from Korean to eight languages using a dedicated mobile phone and a special device rented at major airports in both co-host countries. A user needs to call Tisco's call center via the hands-free speaker phone and speak through the device to an interpreter at the center, who will offer interpretation services via the device. The phone/device kit costs 1,470 yen per day and interpretation services are offered at 390 yen per minute.

Ticket drawing for 2002 World Cup Soccer kicks off

TOKYO, Japan - Sho Nasu, chairman of the Japanese organizing committee for the 2002 World Cup (JAWACS), on May 16 kicks off the first computer drawing to select people eligible to buy tickets for the matches in next year's event to be co-hosted with South Korea. JAWOC organizers said the tickets for some 220,000 seats would be made available in the first lottery pick done by computer.
