The major shipbuilder and the Hyogo Prefecture-based maker of eco-friendly products believe the new plastic could become a cheaper alternative to conventional plastics made from petroleum-derived naphtha besides being less harmful to the environmental. TOKYO, Japan - Officials of Snack-food maker Calbee Foods Co. bow in a gesture of apology at a news conference June 20, where they said the company will recall all of its Jagariko potato snack products because a genetically modified variety of potato, yet to be approved in Japan, was mixed in the ingredients.

Papers on 9 Snow Brand execs sent to prosecutors

The plant former head Osamu Kubota is one of the nine company officials sent to prosecutors on March 16 on suspicion of professional negligence in the massive outbreak of food poisoning that hit western Japan last summer. Others include former Snow Brand President Tetsuro Ishikawa and former Senior Managing Director Hiroshi Soma. The powdered skim milk produced in Taiki was an ingredient in tainted dairy products such as low-fat milk and yogurt drinks made at Snow Brand's Osaka plant that led to widespread food poisoning in June and July last year.

Shiseido announces new company president

TOKYO, Japan - Morio Ikeda (R), vice president of leading cosmetics maker Shiseido Co., meets the press along with Chairman Yoshiharu Fukuhara (C) and President Akira Gemma, in Tokyo on March 6. Company officials said the same day that Ikeda will become Shiseido's next president and his appointment will be formally approved at a board meeting in late June. Gemma will become chairman, and Fukuhara will assume the new post of honorary chairman.

Snow Brand Milk Products to close Osaka plant Jan. 31

OSAKA, Japan - Hideki Takenouchi (R), president of the Osaka branch of Snow Brand Milk Products Co., on Dec. 22 hands over to Hideo Nakazawa, head of the Osaka municipal health office, a notice of closure of the company's plant in Osaka's Miyakojima Ward on Jan. 31. Japan's biggest dairy product maker caused a widespread food-poisoning outbreak in June and July with contaminated low-fat milk and yogurt manufactured there.

Glico again targeted by blackmailer

OSAKA, Japan - Photo shows the head office building in Osaka's Nishi-Yodogawa Ward of Ezaki Glico Co., which received a blackmail letter in June from a man who demanded 50 million yen not to poison the company's products, police sources said Aug. 11. Glico, a major maker of confectioneries and other food products, was also the target of a series of high-profile extortion attempts in the 1980s, which remain unsolved.

Kubota suspected of paying off racketeers

OSAKA, Japan - The Osaka head office of Kubota Corp., a major Japanese farm machinery maker, is raided by police June 15 as the company is suspected of making 350 million yen in illegal payoffs to two ''sokaiya'' racketeers under the guise of rental fees for billboard advertising.
