New 500 yen coin unveiled

TOKYO, Japan - Photo shows a sample of the new 500 yen coin unveiled July 28 by the Bank of Japan. The coin has been designed to end vending-machine fraud. It is almost the same in size, weight and design as the current 500 yen silver-colored coin, but has a slightly yellowish hue. Zinc has been added to change their electrical conductivity and to prevent vending machines from accepting other coins of similar weight and size.

        CHIBA, Japan - Three types of metal bracelet which a Tokyo health appliances company allegedly sold by claiming they help blood flow have no health benefits, police say. Chiba police on Nov. 6 arrested Minoru Kajimoto, the company's president, and six former employees on suspicion of swindling 18 people out of 6.8 million yen by selling them the bracelets. The police believe the company took in some 2.45 billion yen by selling the bracelets to roughly 8,200 people in 40 prefectures from January 2004 to April this year. The bracelets in the photo were shown to the media at the Kamagaya police station in Chiba Prefecture on Nov. 6. (Kyodo)

                    TOKYO, Japan - Photo shows three types of 500-yen nickel brass coins to be issued by the Finance Ministry next spring to mark the 2002 World Cup soccer finals to be co-hosted by Japan and South Korea. The 500-yen coins are the same size as those currently in circulation and will have a world map and players on the head and a soccer ball, the emblem and a symbol indicating the length of a game on the back.

                      TOKYO, Japan - A file photo shows former President Toru Tsujita of Shinwa Bank in Nagasaki Prefecture, who was sentenced by the Tokyo District Court on Feb. 7 to four years in prison for misusing 6.5 billion yen in bank funds. Tsujita, 74, was charged with conspiring to loan money to a Tokyo cosmetic company run by Yoshimasa Soejima, as well as two other companies from July 1993 to June 1995 with the foreknowledge that the money was not likely to be recovered. Soejima, 56, was also sentenced to three years and eight months in prison.
