Park inside U.S. Kadena base in Okinawa opens to locals

NAHA, Japan - The Okinawa Friendship Plaza, a park built recently in the U.S. military's Kadena Air Base in Okinawa Prefecture, is open to the public, Okinawa Mayor Masakazu Nakasone announced July 31. Visitors will be allowed entry to the plaza (shown in this photo taken July 18), which covers about 1,600 square meters, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. The park is aimed at helping promote friendship between city residents and U.S. military personnel, and also serves as a buffer zone between the base and its surrounding area.

Court awards damages to residents near U.S. Kadena base

NAHA, Japan - Plaintiffs in a damages suit over noise from the U.S. Kadena Air Base in Okinawa Prefecture show mixed reactions in Naha to a ruling the Fukuoka High Court handed down Feb. 27. The court awarded about 5.62 billion yen in damages to noise-hit residents but turned down the plaintiffs' demand for a ban on night-to-early morning flights at the base. (Kyodo)

27,000 people form human chain around U.S. Kadena Air Base

NAGO, Japan - About 27,000 people surround the U.S. Air Force Kadena Air Base (L) in Okinawa on July 20, shouting ''no'' to the U.S. military presence in Japan's southernmost prefecture before Group of Eight (G-8) leaders meet for their annual summit from July 21. Participants formed a human chain three times from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. to encircle the 17.4-kilometer fence that surrounds the biggest U.S. military base in the Far East.

Okinawans stage 'peace walk' around U.S. Kadena air base

Radar trouble strands students at airport

NAHA, Japan - Junior high school students headed for a school excursion are stranded at Naha airport in Okinawa Prefecture on Nov. 12 due to trouble with a radar at the U.S. military's Kadena Air Base in the prefecture. The base said workers accidentally cut a cable and that the radar would not resume functioning until Nov. 15. The fault was expected to affect a total of up to 200 flights on Nov. 12 alone.
