Reward offered to locate missing Briton

TOKYO, Japan - Tim Blackman on Aug. 22 announces his offer of a 1.5 million yen reward for information leading to locating his 21-year-old daughter Lucie who has been missing for nearly two months. He made the announcement at a news conference at the British Embassy in Tokyo. Lucie reportedly went missing after leaving her apartment in Tokyo on July 1.

The cave is near a condominium owned by Tokyo businessman Joji Obara, 48, the prime suspect in the investigation into Blackman's death.

TOKYO, Japan - The photo shows a cave in the city of Miura, Kanagawa prefecture, southwest of Tokyo, where the dismembered body parts, were confirmed as those of Lucie Blackman, a 22-year-old British hostess who went missing last July, on Feb. 10. The beach cave is located about 200 meters from a condominium in nearby Aburatsubo owned by alleged rapist Joji Obara. Obara, 48, is suspected of being involved in Blackman's disappearance, but has not been charged with any crime in connection with the case.

Hair from alleged rapist's condo may be Blackman's

TOKYO, Japan - Police said Dec. 28 that hair found in a condominium belonging to alleged rapist Joji Obara may be that of Lucie Blackman (file photo), a 22-year-old British bar hostess who disappeared in July in Tokyo. DNA tests indicate that several strands of hair taken from a bathroom of the condominium owned by Obara in the seaside city of Zushi, Kanagawa Prefecture, southwest of Tokyo, were hers, the police said.

No record of missing Briton leaving Japan despite BBC report

TOKYO, Japan - File photo shows Lucie blackman, 22, who went missing after leaving her apartment in Tokyo's Shibuya Ward on July 1. The British Broadcasting Corp. (BBC) reported Sept. 2 she was witnessed by an Australian tourist at a cash machine in Hong Kong sometime between July 16 and 18. Japanese police said there is no record of Blackman leaving Japan, adding her passport was left behind. Her family is offering a reward of 100,000 pounds ($145,000) for information leading to her whereabouts.

7 infants contract antibiotic-resistant bacteria in Tokyo

TOKYO, Japan - Photo, taken from a Kyodo News helicopter on the morning of Aug. 26 shows the University of Tokyo Hospital where seven infants aged between 3 months and 2 years have contracted an antibiotic-resistant bacteria while being treated at the hospital. Of them, a 2-year-old girl had a fever of 39 C in July but has recovered, while the six others developed no symptoms despite their infections of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), hospital officials said.

Kakuei Tanaka

Born on May 4, 1918 in Niigata Prefecture and died on Dec. 16, 1993. Tanaka became Japan's 40th prime minister in July 1972 at 54, the youngest prime minister since the end of World War II. Tanaka established diplomatic relations with China in September of that year. In December 1974, Tanaka was forced to resign due to his involvement in money scandals. In July 1976, he was arrested on suspicion of accepting 500 million yen in bribes from Lockheed Corp. of the U.S. for his help in selling TriStar aircraft to Japan. In October 1983, he was sentenced to four years in prison by the Tokyo District Court. Tanaka's political influence declined after he suffered a stroke in February 1985 which left him partially paralyzed and confined to a wheelchair. Photo was taken on Aug. 31, 1992.
