Miyakejima's Mt. Oyama erupts again, sends smoke 8 km high

MIYAKE, Japan - People watch as Mt. Oyama on the island of Miyakejima erupts again Aug. 29, sending black smoke about 8 km into the air. A local meteorological observatory said the eruption started at around 4:35 a.m. and called on residents to be on alert. The 813-meter volcano, some 200 kilometers south of Tokyo, has erupted several times this summer, with the last burst occurring Aug. 28 on a small scale. Smoke from the recent eruptions is streaming into Kanagawa Prefecture through Sagami Bay.

                    MIYAKE, Japan - Photo, taken from a Kyodo News helicopter at 4:30 p.m. on Aug. 26., shows that a ranch run by the village of Miyake on Miyakejima Island south of Tokyo is carpeted with volcanic ash. More than 200 additional evacuees left the island of Miyakejima on Aug. 26 following recent volcanic eruptions and earthquakes, leaving only two-thirds of local residents still on the island, the Miyake village hall said.

                      MIYAKEJIMA ISLAND, Japan - About 300 members of the Ground Self-Defense Force disembark from a Maritime SDF ship at Okubo beach on the northern part of Miyakejima Island on Aug. 21. The troops have been dispatched to help locals clean up volcanic ash from Friday's eruption of Mt. Oyama and fortify their houses with sandbags. About 42 special vehicles, including large trucks and bulldozers, were unloaded from the ship for use in the cleanup effort.
