U.N. environment confab begins, U.S. boycotts

KITAKYUSHU, Japan - Environment officials from 43 Asian and Pacific states open a meeting in Kitakyushu on Aug. 31 aimed at adopting regional environmental policies. The United States boycotted the meeting organized by the U.N. Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific to protest Japan's expanded whale hunt.
