Musashimaru wins his first Emperors Cup of the year

TOKYO, Japan - Yokozuna Musashimaru holds the Emperors Cup at Tokyo's Ryogoku Kokugikan on Sept. 17 after the Samoan-born grand champion finished the Autumn Grand Sumo Tournament with a 14-1 record. The championship was the eighth of Musashimaru's career and first title of the year.

Toshimitsu Kitanoumi

TOKYO, Japan - Toshimitsu Kitanoumi, chairman of the Japan Sumo Association (JSA). Former yokozuna Kitanoumi 48, was elected unanimously by the 10-member board at Tokyo's Ryogoku Kokugikan on Feb. 1 to succeed Tokitsukaze, a former ozeki who served two two-year terms as JSA boss and reaches the mandatory retirement age of 65 August, 2002.

Robot sumo tournament begins in Hokkaido

ASAHIKAWA, Japan - Two men set their robotic sumo wrestlers face to face on a special dohyo ring, as first round matches get underway at the first regional preliminaries in Asahikawa, central Hokkaido on Sept. 2. A total of 175 robots, backed by their creators and owners, took part in the Hokkaido preliminary of the 13th FSI-All Japan Robot-Sumo Tournament scheduled for Dec. 23 at Tokyo's Ryogoku Kokugikan.
