Sony starts taking orders for new 'Aibo' robot pet

TOKYO, Japan - Sony Corp.'s second-generation ''Aibo,'' a dog-like robot, gives its paw to an unidentified woman who visited a Tokyo department store Nov. 16 to order one. With its movable ears and tail, the new Aibo is considerably more expressive than its predecessor.

Sony unveils digital music player capable of displaying lyrics

TOKYO, Japan - Photo shows one of 12 new models of Sony Corp.'s Walkman portable digital music player capable of displaying the lyrics of songs downloaded from online music libraries which it unveiled on Sept. 16, 2009, in Tokyo. Sony said purchasers of the new Walkman players, which will hit store shelves in Japan on or after Oct. 10, will be able to download songs from both the Mora and iTunes online digital music sites and lyrics from the ''kashipita'' site of SyncPower Corp., a new Sony ally. Solar-powered Xmas tree with LED illumination goes on display

TOKYO, Japan - A 15-meter-high solar-powered Christmas tree with some 20,000 light emitting diode, or LED, lights is unveiled for the season at the Mitsukoshi department store in Tokyo's Nihonbashi district on Nov. 1. The tree will remain on display until Dec. 25. (Kyodo)

Diamond-studded Christmas tree going for 200.7 million yen

TOKYO, Japan - A diamond-studded Christmas tree is on display at the Nihonbashi Takashimaya department store in Tokyo on Nov. 13. The 40-centimeter-tall Christmas tree is studded with 400 diamonds, the largest weighing 3 karats, and lined with chemically treated miniature roses. The Christmas tree comes with a teddy bear with a diamond necklace. Takashimaya says the set was specially designed for Christmas 2007 with the price set at 200.7 million yen. Without the diamonds, the tree and the teddy bear carry a more affordable price tag: 52,500 yen. The diamond Christmas tree set will be displayed for public viewing from Nov. 14 to Dec. 4. (Kyodo)

Sony unveils new Walkman that 'evolves' to suit users' taste

TOKYO, Japan - Sony Corp. said Sept. 8 it will release five new palm-size digital Walkman models that ''evolves'' in accordance with listeners' preference of music. The new Walkman A series, to be put on the Japanese market Nov. 19, is equipped with functions to learn users' taste in music. The five new models, including a 20-gigabyte one capable of storing up to 13,000 songs, are expected to be available for 30,000 to 35,000 yen. (Kyodo)

Sony to sell futuristic version of AIBO robot pet

TOKYO, Japan - Sony Marketing (Japan) Inc., the sales unit of Sony Corp., said Nov. 8 it will introduce on Nov. 23 a futuristic version of the AIBO dog-like robot pet - the AIBO Entertainment Robot ERS-220. The new AIBO model has 19 LEDs and multiple enhanced touch sensors from head to tail for better emotional expression. It will be priced at 180,000 yen.

Sony to launch orange, white AIBO robots in March

TOKYO, Japan - Sony Corp. said Feb. 26 it will offer orange and white lion cub AIBO ERS-210 robots for a limited time between March 1 and 20. The new spring-version AIBOs will have a suggested retail price of 150,000 yen. Sony will accept orders for them via the Internet at www.aibo.com and by phone. Orders will also be taken at AIBO shops in department stores and e-Sony Shops across Japan.
