DaimlerChrysler launches 'smart Coupe' in Japan

TOKYO, Japan - DaimlerChrysler Japan Co. put on the market Dec. 4 a two-seater car, dubbed the ''smart Coupe,'' which has a 589 cc engine and is priced at 1.3 million yen. Although the new car belongs in the minicar category because of its engine capacity, it is treated as a small passenger car because of its size. It is 2.5 meters long and 1.5 meters wide, larger than a typical minivehicle.

The 1.8/i-VTEC engine will be mounted in the new Civic passenger car model Honda will put on the market this fall. The engine is based on Honda's intelligent VTEC (variable valve timing and lift electronic control) system that switches the valve timing for maximum efficiency during ignition and acceleration to achieve a powerful torque, and then delays intake valve closure during cruising and other low-load conditions for improved fuel economy, the automaker said. The Sky Wave 650 has an engine capacity of 638 cc compared with 600 cc for conventional scooters. Priced at 859,000 yen, it features gear shifts that can be alternated between manual and automatic.

The NSX-R will go on sale in Japan on May 24 with an annual sales target of 60 units. The two-seater NSX-R, a new version of the NSX-R sold between 1992 and 1994, is equipped with a 3.2-liter engine and a six-speed manual transmission.
