3 presidents of nonlife insurance firms announce merger plan

Presidents of 'happoshu' makers oppose tax hike plan

The three major brewers that produce ''happoshu,'' a low-malt, beer-like beverage, voiced strong opposition to government plans to raise taxes on the increasingly popular drink. Happoshu, which is priced less than beer due to lower tax rates, is attracting a growing number of consumers and has captured about 25% of the overall beer market.

Yasuda Fire, Nissan Fire, Taisei Fire eye integration

TOKYO, Japan - Yasuda Fire & Marine Insurance Co. (file photo of headquarters), Japan's second-largest nonlife insurer, has entered final talks with Nissan Fire & Marine Insurance Co. and Taisei Fire & Marine Insurance Co. to integrate management, possibly by April 2002, industry sources said Nov. 2. Each firm has close business ties with the Mizuho Financial Group.

Sanwa, Tokai, Toyo banks to form UFJ Holdings

TOKYO, Japan - Sanwa Bank, Tokai Bank and Toyo Trust & Banking Co. have announced they will set up a joint holding company called ''UFJ Holdings Inc.'' in April 2001. Shaking hands at a news conference Oct. 4 are (from L to R) Tokai Bank President Hideo Ogasawara, Sanwa Bank President Kaneo Muromachi and Toyo Trust & Banking President Shunroku Yokosuka. UFJ, which stands for United Financial of Japan, will be based in Osaka, and the three banks will integrate their operations under the new holding company.

NCB begins operations under new owners

TOKYO, Japan - Nippon Credit Bank (NCB) opens Sept. 4 for its first official day of business under the ownership of a consortium led by Internet investor Softbank Corp., following 21 months of state control that ended Sept. 1. The new management is expected to adopt a plan to rename the institution Aozora Bank in January 2001. Aozora means ''blue sky'' in Japanese. Tokai and Sanwa to go ahead with merger plan

Tokai and Sanwa said they have agreed to start talks on setting up a joint holding company in April 2001 and possibly a merger in April 2002.

FRC inks accord to sell NCB to Softbank-led group

TOKYO, Japan - Tadayo Homma (L), next president of Nippon Credit Bank (NCB), joins hand with Shunsuke Takeda (2nd from L), vice president of leasing company Orix Corp., Softbank Corp. founder and President Masayoshi Son (3rd from L), and Tomochika Iwashita (R), managing director of Tokio Marine & Fire Insurance Co., at a Tokyo hotel on June 6 after the government's Financial Reconstruction Commission (FRC) and Deposit Insurance Corp. (DIC) signed a basic agreement earlier in the day to sell the nationalized NCB to the tripartite consortium led by Softbank.
