No. of vacationers returning from hometowns peaks

TOKYO, Japan - Tokyo-bound cars line up at the Niiza tollgate on the Kanetsu Expressway in Saitama Prefecture Jan. 3 as the number of vacationers returning to the capital and other major cities from New Year's holidays in hometowns and resorts peaked. A 23-kilometer traffic jam blocked the expressway near the Higashi-Matsuyama Interchange in Saitama. Routes and connection points saw more travelers than last year, when many people stayed home due to fears about the Y2K computer problem.

        TOKYO, Japan - Haneda airport in Tokyo is crowded with travelers who are leaving on Dec. 29 for their hometowns and resort areas to spend the New Year's holiday season. The number of travelers during the New Year's holiday is expected to increase, rebounding from last New Year's holiday, which was clouded by Y2K computer problem fears.
