Farm minister inspects Isahaya Bay over poor seaweed crop

NAGASAKI, Japan - Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Minister Yoshio Yatsu (C) samples seaweed Jan. 29 in the Ariake Sea off Saga Prefecture in his inspection of the Isahaya Bay land reclamation site in Nagasaki Prefecture. He made his visit due to local fishermen's allegations that the project is responsible for this season's poor seaweed crop in the Ariake Sea.

Gov't appeals court decision over Isahaya

TOKYO, Japan - People stage a sit-in in front of the farm ministry in Tokyo on July 10 after the Japanese government appealed a district court ruling that ordered the state to open the Isahaya Bay dike in Nagasaki Prefecture, citing concerns that opening it will expose the area to risks of high tides which would damage farming business on the reclaimed land there. Court rejects fishermen's plea to stop bay reclamation project

Farm minister noncommittal on resuming Isahaya reclamation

ISAHAYA, Japan - Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Minister Tsutomu Takebe (L), along with Nagasaki Gov. Genjiro Kaneko (R), on May 26 inspects the site in Isahaya Bay, Nagasaki Prefecture, where reclamation work has been suspended since late February on fishermen's protests. After the inspection, the farm minister declined to respond a demand by local officials on the resumption of the controversial land reclamation project.

Symposium held to demand halt to Isahaya Bay reclamation

ISAHAYA, Japan - A citizens' group holds a symposium in Isahaya, Nagasaki Prefecture, on April 14 to muster support for their demand for an immediate halt to land reclamation work in Isahaya Bay in southwestern Japan. At the symposium, held to coincide with the fourth anniversary of the separation of the bay from the Ariake Sea, the group adopted a declaration urging the immediate opening of the dike's lock gates to restore the bay's wetland to its natural condition.

Isahaya Bay watergates to be opened

Residents demand completion of Isahaya reclamation project

NAGASAKI, Japan - Some 600 residents of the town of Takaki, Nagasaki Prefecture, stage a rally on March 24 to demand the completion of a state-run reclamation project in Isahaya Bay in the prefecture and oppose the opening of a dike in the bay. At a meeting held in the town, the residents chanted, ''Don't open the drainage gate.'' Local seaweed farmers, whose livelihoods have taken a hammering from the poor seaweed harvest, have been demanding the opening of the gates to revive the local ecological system.

Gov't, Nagasaki at odds on halting Isahaya reclamation work
