Gov't, Nagasaki at odds on halting Isahaya reclamation work

TOKYO, Japan - Genjiro Kaneko (L), governor of Nagasaki Prefecture, hands a document carrying a resolution adopted by the Nagasaki prefectural assembly to Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Minister Yoshio Yatsu on March 7 in Tokyo. Kaneko is opposed to a proposal to temporarily halt a reclamation project and open a dike in Isahaya Bay in the prefecture. On March 6, Yatsu expressed willingness to suspend the reclamation work to analyze the quality of water in the 1,710-hectare reservoir behind the dike.

Gov't appeals court decision over Isahaya

TOKYO, Japan - People stage a sit-in in front of the farm ministry in Tokyo on July 10 after the Japanese government appealed a district court ruling that ordered the state to open the Isahaya Bay dike in Nagasaki Prefecture, citing concerns that opening it will expose the area to risks of high tides which would damage farming business on the reclaimed land there. Residents demand completion of Isahaya reclamation project

NAGASAKI, Japan - Some 600 residents of the town of Takaki, Nagasaki Prefecture, stage a rally on March 24 to demand the completion of a state-run reclamation project in Isahaya Bay in the prefecture and oppose the opening of a dike in the bay. At a meeting held in the town, the residents chanted, ''Don't open the drainage gate.'' Local seaweed farmers, whose livelihoods have taken a hammering from the poor seaweed harvest, have been demanding the opening of the gates to revive the local ecological system.

Farm minister inspects Isahaya Bay over poor seaweed crop

NAGASAKI, Japan - Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Minister Yoshio Yatsu (C) samples seaweed Jan. 29 in the Ariake Sea off Saga Prefecture in his inspection of the Isahaya Bay land reclamation site in Nagasaki Prefecture. He made his visit due to local fishermen's allegations that the project is responsible for this season's poor seaweed crop in the Ariake Sea.
