Olympic champ Takahashi sets record in Ome road race

TOKYO, Japan - Olympic marathon champion Naoko Takahashi breaks another record Feb. 18, when she set a new Japanese best in the women's 30-kilometer road race at the annual Ome ''marathon'' races in western Tokyo. Takahashi clocked 1 hour, 41 minutes, 57 seconds in her second official race since setting an Olympic record at the Sydney Games last September as she negotiated a field of some 15,000 ''fun'' runners. Takahashi shaved 1.29 minutes off the previous national 30-km mark, set by Eriko Asai in 1991.

Mori golfed in Chiba under corporate membership

The revelation, made Feb. 16, came a day after Mori sparked outrage among both ruling and opposition lawmakers for receiving a virtually free 40 million yen membership at a Yokohama golf club from another executive.

Ex-head of Shinwa bank gets 4-yr jail sentence for loans

TOKYO, Japan - A file photo shows former President Toru Tsujita of Shinwa Bank in Nagasaki Prefecture, who was sentenced by the Tokyo District Court on Feb. 7 to four years in prison for misusing 6.5 billion yen in bank funds. Tsujita, 74, was charged with conspiring to loan money to a Tokyo cosmetic company run by Yoshimasa Soejima, as well as two other companies from July 1993 to June 1995 with the foreknowledge that the money was not likely to be recovered. Soejima, 56, was also sentenced to three years and eight months in prison.

Takahashi receives People's Honor Award
