Mitsubishi-Tokyo is one of three megabank groups which began operations the same day.

IY Bank approved

TOKYO, Japan - Ito-Yokado Co. President Toshifumi Suzuki speaks at a news conference in Tokyo on April 6 the retailing group plans to launch its IY Bank in mid-May in the hope that the banking subsidiary will swing into the black within two years. The Financial Services Agency gave preliminary approval earlier in the day to an application by the group to establish the bank.

3 UFJ banks to post losses

TOKYO, Japan - Executives of three Japanese banks to merge as UFJ Holdings Inc. in April announced at a news conference March 16 they will post losses in their March settlements to write off over 1 trillion yen in bad loans. Sanwa Bank, Tokai Bank and Toyo Trust & Banking Co. are the first major banks in Japan to formally announce losses in March book-closings for fiscal 2000.

Sanwa, Tokai, Toyo banks to form UFJ Holdings

TOKYO, Japan - Sanwa Bank, Tokai Bank and Toyo Trust & Banking Co. have announced they will set up a joint holding company called ''UFJ Holdings Inc.'' in April 2001. Shaking hands at a news conference Oct. 4 are (from L to R) Tokai Bank President Hideo Ogasawara, Sanwa Bank President Kaneo Muromachi and Toyo Trust & Banking President Shunroku Yokosuka. UFJ, which stands for United Financial of Japan, will be based in Osaka, and the three banks will integrate their operations under the new holding company.

Mega banking group Mizuho inaugurated

TOKYO, Japan - A tape is cut Sept. 29 to inaugurate a joint holding company, Mizuho Holdings Inc., the product of the integration of Dai-Ichi Kangyo Bank (DKB), Fuji Bank and the Industrial Bank of Japan. The union creates the world's biggest banking group in terms of assets. The operations of the three banks will be fully integrated in April 2002.

NCB begins operations under new owners

TOKYO, Japan - Nippon Credit Bank (NCB) opens Sept. 4 for its first official day of business under the ownership of a consortium led by Internet investor Softbank Corp., following 21 months of state control that ended Sept. 1. The new management is expected to adopt a plan to rename the institution Aozora Bank in January 2001. Aozora means ''blue sky'' in Japanese.
