TOKYO, Japan - World champion Naoki Eiga of the Hokkaido police department claims his first kendo national championship crown at Nippon Budoukan in Tokyo on Nov. 3, denying defending champion Masahiro Miyazaki a record seventh title with an overtime victory in the final. Eiga (R) scored a decisive strike to the wrist to seal the title moments after he deftly dodged Miyazaki's (L) attempted strike at his head in a match that lasted 7 minutes, 45 seconds.

Hatakeyama floors Sakamoto to retain WBA lightweight crown+

YOKOHAMA, Japan - Takanori Hatakeyama scores a knock-out victory over Hiroyuki Sakamoto in the 10th round of their scheduled 12-round bout, bringing Hatakeyama victory in his first defense of the World Boxing Association (WBA) lightweight title Oct. 11 at Yokohama Arena. The end came 18 seconds into the round when a straight right by Hatakeyama landed on Sakamoto's face following a straight left. The champion was ahead on all cards when the end came. He knocked out Gilbert Serrano of Venezuela for the title in June.

OSAKA, Japan - Popular Japanese boxer Joichiro Tatsuyoshi announces his retirement in Osaka on Aug. 30, one day after he was defeated by champion Veeraphol Nakonluangpromotion of Thailand in the World Boxing Council bantamweight title match at Osaka Dome.

Mongolia's Sim wins WBA super featherweight title
