NTT DoCoMo to launch 3G service on trial basis

TOKYO, Japan - Photo shows mobile terminals compatible with the FOMA third-generation (3G) mobile phone services which NTT DoCoMo Inc. will offer on a trial basis in the Tokyo metropolitan area between May 30 and Sept. 30 to gauge consumer response. Full-scale launch of the service is scheduled for Oct. 1. FOMA stands for ''freedom of mobile multimedia access.''

          FUKUOKA, Japan - Cellular-phone users in Japan are unable to use the ''i-mode'' Internet service of NTT Mobile Communications Network Inc. (NTT DoCoMo) for three hours March 28. All of NTT DoCoMo's 5.46 million mobile phones equipped with i-mode were unable to send or receive data through the service.
