Doctor says produced 1st surrogate birth in Japan

NAGANO, Japan - Suwa Maternity Clinic Director Yahiro Netsu meets the press on May 19 to announce he has helped a woman become the first surrogate mother in Japan. The woman successfully gave birth at the clinic in the town of Shimosuwa in Nagano Prefecture, central Japan, this spring for her sister, who had undergone a hysterectomy.

3 Laotians arrested over false registration of baby girl's birth

YOKOHAMA, Japan - Douangbouppha Thong Inh (in photo), a Laotian, his wife and a female compatriot living with the couple in Ayase, Kanagawa Prefecture, were arrested on May 12 on suspicion of falsely registering the birth of a baby girl in 2007. The baby was born to the woman living with the couple, but the couple registered the baby as their own in a bid to prevent the husband, who had overstayed his visa, from being deported. (Kyodo)

Japanese doctor abducted in Ethiopia, freed in Kenya

INA, Japan - Chihiro Akahane, 34, brother of Keiko Akahane, 32, and her mother Chieko, 64, appear before reporters at a relative's house in Ina, Nagano Prefecture, Jan. 8 after Keiko, a female Japanese doctor abducted in Ethiopia, was freed in Kenya.
