Uniqlo's Yanai critical of industry 'safeguard' requests

TOKYO, Japan - Ito-Yokado Co. President Toshifumi Suzuki speaks at a news conference in Tokyo on April 6 the retailing group plans to launch its IY Bank in mid-May in the hope that the banking subsidiary will swing into the black within two years. Ministers reach basic accord on farm import curb

TOKYO, Japan - Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Minister Yoshio Yatsu heads for a meeting in the Diet on March 30 with Finance Minister Kiichi Miyazawa and Economy, Trade and Industry Minister Takeo Hiranuma to discuss problems resulting from surging imports from China of stone leeks, ''shiitake'' mushrooms and rushes used in ''tatami'' mats. They reached a basic agreement to impose a temporary emergency import curb on these products.

Japanese makers press gov't for towel import curb

TOKYO, Japan - Yoshihide Yoshihara (R), head of the Japan Towel Industrial Association, on Feb. 26 in Tokyo presents to Iwao Okamoto, director general of the Economy, Trade and Industry Ministry's Manufacturing Industries Bureau, a petition asking the government to impose an emergency import curb on towels from China and Vietnam. Supermarket operator Nagasakiya goes bankrupt
