JR puts up fences on Kyoto station platforms to prevent falls

KYOTO, Japan - A bullet train on the Tokaido Shinkansen line pulls in to a platform with a safety fence at Kyoto Station on June 4. Central Japan Railway Co. (JR Tokai) began erecting safety fences on the station's platforms as part of safety measures it is promoting following an accident in January in Tokyo in which three people died.

Two carriages of the train D2809 from Guiyang to Guangzhou came off the tracks that were hit by mud and rockslide as the train was about to arrive at the Rongjiang station, the company said. The injured people include one train attendant and seven passengers. They have been receiving treatment at local hospital. A total of 136 other passengers have been evacuated, the company said. According to JR East, the super deluxe ''Green Car'' will seat up to 18 passengers and will boast the same level of comfort as a first-class cabin on an airliner. According to JR engineers, a key N-700 technical feature is that the train, through the use of air spring, can bend at curves so that it does not have to decelerate when passing through curving passages. The N-700 Series, which will run in the Tokaido Sanyo Shinkansen line, can speed through curves at a maximum speed of 270 kilometers per hour in the Tokaido sector and 300 kph in the Sanyo sector, they say. As a result, the N-700 Series can travel between Tokyo and the Shin-Osaka station in Osaka in 2 hours and 25 minutes, down 5 minutes, and between Tokyo and the Hakata station in Fukuoka in 4 hours and 50 minutes. Subscribers to KDDI Corp.'s ''au'' mobile phone service will be able to pay train fares with their handsets at East Japan Railway Co. stations starting in January 2006, the two companies said. JR East will allow its Suica electronic train fare card functions to be installed on Internet-capable mobile phone handsets for use with KDDI's EZ FeliCa service to be launched in September in combination with Sony Corp.'s FeliCa contactless integrated-circuit card technology.
