Exhibit of joint calligraphy, abstract works opens at U.N.

GENEVA, Switzerland - An exhibition showcasing the collaborative works of a Japanese calligrapher and French abstract artist opened at the European headquarters of the United Nations in Geneva on June 5. The exhibit features the uniquely styled works of Shiryu Katayama (standing at left), 57, a resident of Tokyo's Setagaya Ward, and France-based Tessarolo. Much of the exhibit consists of kanji characters written by Katayama, which Tessarolo then adorned with an image expressing his feelings about the kanji's meaning.

      UNESCO holds protest exhibit over destruction of Buddhas

      PARIS, France - Koichi Matsuura, director general of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), makes a speech June 5 opening an art exhibition at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris organized to protest the Taliban's destruction of Buddhist monumental sculptures in Afghanistan. Standing at left is Japanese painter Ikuo Hirayama, who serves as UNESCO's goodwill ambassador.
