Police arrest importer of Chinese version of Viagra

NAGOYA, Japan - Naoyuki Yokota is taken to police from his home in Yokohama on Aug. 23 after being arrested for alleged unauthorized importation and sale of a Chinese-made drug containing an active ingredient of the anti-impotence drug Viagra. Yokota is suspected of importing and selling more than 200 bottles of the product for around 330,000 yen to a Tokyo company employee and others.

Higher taxi fares in Nagoya

NAGOYA, Japan - A taxi company employee puts a new fare sticker on the side window of a taxi in Nagoya, where the starting fare went up to 500 yen on Oct. 19 for the initial ride of up to 1.3 kilometers, the first effective fare increase in 11 years. On the same day, the government announced a 7.2 percent hike in Tokyo taxi fares from Dec. 3, raising the starting fare for the first 2 km from 660 yen to 710 yen.

Police arrest Mitutoyo execs over nuke-linked exports

TOKYO, Japan - Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department arrest Kazusaku Tezuka (photo), president of precision instruments maker Mitutoyo Corp., and four other company executives on Aug. 25 on suspicion of exporting without a license two measuring devices convertible for use in building nuclear weapons.

Suzuki's small SX4 SUV developed with Fiat debuts in Japan

TOKYO, Japan - Suzuki Motor Corp. Mitsubishi Heavy to take orders for Wakamaru robot in Sept.

TOKYO, Japan - Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. said Aug. 29 it will accept orders from Sept. 16 to Oct. 31 for the Wakamaru humanoid robot (in photo) for use at home. Mitsubishi said it plans to sell 100 of the robot at a price of 1.58 million yen each, including consumption tax, initially for residents of Tokyo's 23 wards. It will select buyers by lot if too many people place orders. Wakamaru, 1-meter high and 30 kilograms in weight, is powered by rechargeable batteries and moves on wheels. It can work as a ''secretary,'' taking note of the owner's schedule and announcing appointments. It can also serve as a ''watchdog'' by alerting the home owner in the event of a break-in, the company said.

Toyota's 1st qtr group sales rise 10.5%, record high
