Gov't ordered to compensate Okinawa landowner over base
NAHA, Japan - Shoichi Chibana is seen Nov. 21 in front of the U.S. Navy's Sobe Communications Site in the village of Yomitan, Okinawa Prefecture. The Naha District Court ordered the state Nov. 30 to pay 470,000 yen in damages to Chibana for forcing him to lease the land to the U.S. military even after land-use contracts between him and the state expired in 1996.
