Icebreaker crew take open-air New Year bath in Antarctica

ABOARD THE SHIRASE, Antarctic Ocean - Sailors aboard the Japanese icebreaker Shirase take a New Year's bath Jan. 6 in an open-air deck tub with a magnificent view of icebergs in the distance. Members of an expedition to Japan's Showa Base in Antarctica also bathed in the 2-meter-square tub built with scrap wood from the hold of the 11,600-ton Maritime Self-Defense Force ship. The temperature at noon was minus 2 C.

MSDF ship leaves Japan to resume refueling mission

YOKOSUKA, Japan - The 4,550-ton Murasame, a Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force destroyer, leaves its Yokosuka base, south of Tokyo, on Jan. 24 for the Indian Ocean to resume the antiterrorism refueling mission, as relatives of its crew members see them off. Japan's last MSDF ship returns from refueling mission

TOKYO, Japan - After completing a four-month mission to refuel vessels of U.S.-led coalition forces in the Indian Ocean, the 8,150-ton Maritime Self-Defense Force supply ship Tokiwa berths at Narumi pier in Tokyo on Nov. 23, as families of the crew members await the return of their loved ones. The Tokiwa is the last MSDF vessel to return home after Japan called off a six-year refueling mission in the Indian Ocean, as the government failed to get a bill through parliament to re-authorize the mission.

Icebreaker Shirase leaves on 48th Antarctic expedition

TOKYO, Japan - The Japanese icebreaker Shirase leaves Harumi dock in Tokyo on Nov. 14 for its 48th Antarctic expedition, marking the 50th anniversary of Japan's initial exploration of the continent. The 11,600-ton exploration ship is expected to arrive at Japan's Showa Base in Antarctica in mid-December and return to Japan next spring.

Expedition crew enjoy open-air bath on New Year's Day

ABOARD THE SHIRASE, Antarctica - Members of Japan's 44th Antarctica expedition team enjoy an open-air bath aboard the icebreaker Shirase docked near Japan's Showa Base in Antarctica on Jan. 1. Ship crew and expedition team members took a bath which was set up on deck of the Shirase and watched the icebergs floating by. Although it is summer, the temperature does not rise above around 3 C during the day around the Showa Base. (Kyodo)
