Japan's last coal mine closes, ending 82-year history
KUSHIRO, Japan - A miner shows off a piece of coal he picked for his memory before the closure of Japan's last coal mine in Kushiro, eastern Hokkaido, on Jan. 30. The closedown ended the mine's 82-year history and marked the conclusion of the country's coal industry, which fueled its postwar reconstruction and modernization.
