Scientists develop robot able to lie down, get up

TSUKUBA, Japan - A government institute and a private-sector company said Sept. 19 they have jointly developed a humanoid (photos) that can lie down and get up on its own. The National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, which developed the robot with Kawada Industries Ltd., said it has created the world's first robot capable of rising by itself, overcoming a major weakness in previous robots that cannot rise on their own.           The Tottori Prefectural Industrial Technology Center opened the Tottori Robot Hub," a base to support the introduction of robots to production sites, at the Machine and Materials Research Institute in Yonago City on April 24. Of the total area of 174 square meters, 134 square meters have been set aside for a simulated production line using five robots, articulated and SCARA robots. Fumihiro Yoshimura, Director of the Commerce, Industry, and Labor Bureau of Tottori Prefecture, said, "We want to make sure that Tottori Prefecture is known as a leading prefecture in robotics," while Satoru Fukuoka, President of the Tottori Industrial Technology Center, expressed his hope that the center would become a hub for information on how to make factories smarter.             NEC is making a full-scale entry into the quantum computing domain. From April to June 2020, the company will launch a co-creation service to solve combinatorial optimization problems, including the use of annealing machines that employ the SX Aurora Tsubasa vector supercomputer. Prior to this, the company will establish a new 20-person Quantum Computing Promotion Office in January 2008 to promote the development of applications and technologies through joint demonstrations with customers. The company plans to invest about 1 billion yen in Canada's D-Wave Systems for collaboration. On the other hand, the quantum annealing system will be based on a domestically developed machine jointly developed with the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) and D-wave, which will be a collaborative partner.               Daihen will start a service to realize maintenance of industrial robots installed at customers' sites via the Internet within the month. The service will appeal to small and medium-sized companies that are not familiar with handling robots. Daihen's IoT (Internet of Things) compatible FD19 robot controller is connected to the Internet (photo) to enable remote operation. This enables accurate confirmation of information that cannot be obtained by telephone inquiries alone, and is expected to reduce the burden of on-site response. There is no charge for using the maintenance service. In the future, the company plans to expand the service to overseas markets such as Southeast Asia, Europe, and the United States by utilizing the service centers it has established around the world.                 Sanritsu Automation (Machida City, Tokyo), Aichi Institute of Technology, Tokyo Metropolitan Industrial Technology Research Institute, and others have developed an inspection robot that can operate in water and mud. Any distortions or deformations, such as pipes collapsing vertically, will be detected and reflected in the maintenance plan. The aircraft is 39 cm wide, 72 cm long, and 40 cm high, and the angle sensor on the aircraft can measure the inclination of water pipes in 1 degree increments. The angle of the concrete structure of the waterway and the angle of the joints will be measured to check the drainage performance. Drainage ditches of less than 60 cm in width were difficult for humans to enter, and it was necessary to check the amount of oxygen and whether gas was stagnant.                       Jibiru Survey & Design (Fukui City) has completed a dedicated base for bridge inspection support robots on land adjacent to its headquarters plant. The investment was about 40 million yen. The company expects to receive more inquiries after its robot was listed in the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism's new technology guidelines, and aims to receive orders for the inspection of about 400 bridges a year. In 2008, Jibiru Survey & Design entered the bridge inspection robot business, aiming to diversify its business from construction consulting. By the end of March 2007, the company had inspected 334 bridges.
