Nagoya subway launches female-only train compartments

NAGOYA, Japan - Commuters pack a female-only compartment of Higashiyama subway line, operated by the city government of Nagoya, at Nagoya Station on Sept. 30. The subway line began operating morning rush hour female-only compartments to curb incidents of groping, becoming Japan's first subway line to do so. (Kyodo)

Osaka Metro station connected to World Expo venue

The first train departs new Osaka Metro Chuo Line station Yumeshima in Osaka on Jan. 19, 2025, following a tape-cutting ceremony marking its opening. The station is directly connected to the venue of the 2025 World Exposition starting in April on an artificial island called Yumeshima in the western Japan city.

New tram starts operating north of Tokyo

New train for Yamagata Shinkansen Line

A new shinkansen train, the E8 series, is being unloaded from a vessel at a port in the Miyagi Prefecture city of Sendai, northeastern Japan, on Jan. 29, 2023. The train will be introduced on the Yamagata Shinkansen Line in the spring of 2024, replacing the E3 series and raising the maximum speed of the service from the current 275 kilometers per hour to 300 km.
